Start with the official case-type selector

eCourts supports Case Type search for case status and its filing form contains a Case Type field. For a Gurgaon matter, select Haryana, Gurugram and the correct establishment first, then use the case-type label shown by the official system rather than guessing from an abbreviation copied from an old cause list or third-party page.

Important: Case-type names and codes are administrative/search classifications. The live court record, pleadings, statute and judicial order control the actual nature and status of the proceeding.

What does “case type” mean in Gurgaon District Court?

A case type is the category used by the court information system to classify a proceeding for filing, registration, listing and search. It can indicate whether the matter is, for example, a civil suit, criminal matter, appeal, execution proceeding, matrimonial matter or another procedural category. The eCourts civil filing form expressly asks for the case type and later records a case code as part of office processing.

The label is useful because the same numerical case number can occur in different categories and years. Searching only a number without the correct type can therefore produce no result or the wrong result. For Gurgaon/Gurugram, the safer sequence is district and establishment first, then case type, then number and year.

Case-type names, abbreviations and codes

Users often encounter short labels in cause lists, case-status results or filing screens. Those labels are database abbreviations. They should be read in the context of the selected court and establishment because an abbreviation can be unfamiliar, can change with software configuration, or can mean something narrower than the everyday legal description of the dispute.

For that reason, this page does not publish a static “master code list” and present it as permanently authoritative. The official eCourts interface and the current court record are better sources for the exact category available for the Gurgaon establishment at the time of search or filing.

  1. Select Haryana and Gurugram in the official eCourts service.
  2. Select the correct court complex and establishment.
  3. Choose the Case Type search route where appropriate.
  4. Select the case-type category shown by the live system.
  5. Enter the case number and year, then compare parties, court and registration details before relying on the result.

If the case type is unknown, first try a stronger identifier such as CNR, or use party/advocate/FIR search where the official system supports it. The Gurgaon Case Status guide explains those routes.

Case type when filing a new matter

The eCourts filing form contains a case-type field because category selection affects registration and workflow. Choosing a category is not merely an SEO or search task. It should reflect the proceeding actually being instituted and the jurisdiction of the receiving court.

Before filing, match the proposed category against the statute or procedural route, the relief sought, the court level and any special forum. Then verify the current filing interface. If the filing is returned under objection, use the Gurgaon Filing Objections guide rather than assuming the case-type field is the only problem.

Five distinctions that prevent case-type mistakes

Do not confuseWhy it matters
Case type vs case statusType describes the proceeding category; status describes what is happening to that particular case.
Case type vs statuteA statute may authorize several different proceedings, applications or appeals.
Case type vs reliefThe same procedural family can contain different prayers and interim applications.
Case type vs court designationThe same broad dispute may be filed before different courts depending on jurisdiction and stage.
Case type vs next remedyAn appeal, revision, execution or review is a new procedural route, not merely a continuation label.

How common Gurgaon matters map to the wider site

Use the case-type label as a routing clue, then open the relevant procedure guide. For civil suits, see Civil Case Procedure. For criminal matters, see Criminal Case Procedure. For matrimonial matters, see Divorce Procedure and Maintenance Procedure. For cheque dishonour, see Cheque Bounce Procedure. For decree enforcement, see Execution of Decree.

Case-type decision framework

A useful way to identify the correct category is to ask five questions in sequence: What legal relationship created the dispute? What document starts this proceeding? Which court has jurisdiction? What relief is being requested? What procedural stage is the matter at? If those answers point to a filing category that matches the live court selector, the classification is more reliable than choosing a label because it “sounds close.”

This framework also creates an information-gain check: if two labels look similar, compare the initiating document and procedural stage. A suit, appeal, revision and execution petition may all concern the same underlying dispute but represent materially different proceedings.
